And all of these I have embraced except for crochet. I have always admired every thing crochet, even had some of you make me things because I had no idea how to start ...
She made this wee sea creature the other day..look at all those pearls lol
So I called some local shops that specialize in Yarn, and I have a class scheduled this week and some classes in the fall with a British crochet teacher..
I went out the other day and purchased some hooks and last night I looked at something I liked on Pinterest...a doily...and I knew how to make a chain ...I practised tension and consistency-- for let me say a few yards and then I tackled this...I had no idea what I was really doing, but I just kept doing the same thing over and over again...4 chains, and some single stitches and look at this...I made a doily or something that resembles a doily...I am sure there are all kinds of mistakes many of you will be able to note, but I am actually pleased I actually made something that resembles something CROCHET. ( and it looks like ruffles) I made it from a ball of alpaca yarn...possibly not the best choice..but it is so soft...
I will be placing this under glass somewhere so I can chuckle some day at my feeble attempt at crochet.... We have to start somewhere right?
When I spoke to the lady who will be providing me private classes this week she mentioned
Of course this had me spinning because that is exactly what I want to learn along with some edgings for some hankies..
I don't even have a poodle. but I just fell madly in love with this..

DeleteLove the amigurumi that you posted. I've been crocheting since I was in my early twenties. Taught by a very young (7ish) cousin. Was heavy into baby blankets and afghans and shawls. Did make crocheted christening gown for my Goddaughter and even attempted an evening gown. It was beautiful but it grew the entire evening that I wore it. Thankfully the bodice stayed put because it was embellished with ribbons that tied in the front. I stopped the big crocheting because I found myself trying to best my own time on long rows. Talk about making something restful into something stressful. I now use my crochet talents mostly to make hats for a local pediatric cancer group. You will love it. I can see ruffled edges on everything you do. Like on the seams of your little purses, oh yes, you will have fun.
ReplyDeleteI love your story of your dress and how it grew...I can see that lol. and yes I am not easing any stress at the moment either...I keep wanting to find that comfort feeling.....I love that you are making hats now that is just the sweetest thing....all my kids had them when we were in the hospital...especially the twins as they were born in december and it was very cold that year...
DeleteI remember mom making me work on chains(what seemed like for years) until the stitches passed her inspection. As an adult when I started making doilies, she admitted do a pattern if someone showed her how. She also had my sisters and I embroidering our own pillow cases before we started kindergarten. May times after an afternoon of stitching, she would have to cut our dresses away from our pillow cases. What some fond memories. I miss her so much at times like these.

DeleteI am crocheting a Christmas Rose Hot Pad I got from a FREE PATTERN SITE for vintage patterns: http://freevintagecrochet.com/print/989 I have been searching for it for years. I have the Edging book in the lower left corner that my Mom handed down to me. I have about 10 little booklets she bought for 10 cents each. I think you did exceptionally well considering that most people start with a scarf or something simple that uses worsted weight yarn. After Mom taught me the basics with WW yarn she taught me to do the Crochet Irish Rose which I love-I've made hundreds! It also happens to be the same rose in the middle of the hot pad and I'm sure that's why I wanted that pattern. I love to do it all and wish I could find a place that taught China Painting flowers and birds on porcelain plates, etc now that I retired and have the time to learn. I haven't found anyone yet. Also, don't forget YOU TUBE! One of my favorite techniques is called Crocodile Stitch because it's 3 dimensional and I learned from YT because the instructions are a bit confusing. I have two quilt tops under construction also. Mom also has a plastic shoe form that she crochets little high heels from and I think you would gasp to see how lovely they are. I have never found any forms on ebay or anywhere else so when it came apart in the center, I glued it back. I have the pattern but my first attempt didn't fit the form so I will try again this fall maybe.

DeleteI've been crocheting on and off for over 40 years when my older sister taught me the basic stitches now and even I still find something new to work on, one of these being amigurmi which I'm very interested in trying out soon.....my first attempt at crochet was a very long scarf using up every available scrap piece of wool I could find and it's just snowballed from there. Keep it up and you'll soon get it down pat with the terminology and correct tension and which hand holding position suits you best with time and lots of practice :) Barb.

DeleteBarb, I also learned to crochet about 40 years ago. If you don't already know how to do the "Magic Ring" or magic circle, it's a very different and important part of most Amigurumi patterns because they start with a circle with NO hole in the center . DeleteI love amigurumi, too! Tried to make some when I was 8 years old and attended crochet classes :) I found so many beautiful crochet and amigurumi patterns on Etsy, add them all to my favourites, maybe some day I will start to crochet again...

Your first crochet is pretty good. I Love crochet. It was the second art I learned, a 9yrs old. First was drawing. I much, much better at crochet. Trying for fit it in with every thing is hard. There was a very long time that was all I did. Love the patterns you found. Making stuffed toys is so much fun.

DeleteI have made the pink poodle for my grand daughter. It's really quite easy and adorable. I did learn you have to stuff the neck tightly tho, she ends up with whip lash if not stuffed enough ;)

DeleteSamm, I think you wil be surprised at your first effort at crochet if you take the basic finishing steps of blocking and drying it. It's amazing how a sort of crumpled up cluster of thread loops can become an ornate doily once it is blocked and starched. The threads then take the shapes that you want them to (or that the pattern dictates) instead of retaining the curling shape they've assumed from being in a Tightly wound ball from so long. Try it and you will be amazed. Go to your nearest shop for help if you are uncertain about the process.
